Prosodic Categorisation

چکیده
The structural elements of the prosodic hierarchy and the ways in which phonological generalisations make reference to them are investigated. Assuming, as argued, that these elements constitute a universal set of primitives, the different types (categories) of such elements, especially the syllable, are examined more closely. Specifically, the traditional weight dichotomy of ‘heavy’ vs. ‘light’ syllables is shown to be empirically inadequate for the explanation of the diversity of stress systems attested in natural languages. Rejecting functional explanations of syllable weight, this thesis proposes a structure-based alternative within the framework of Optimality Theory (OT). It is demonstrated that grammars may distinguish up to six or more syllable weight categories by means of a small number of ranked and violable constraints. This also accounts for reference to categories of elements other than the syllable. Both prosodic structure and properties of elements, especially segmental sonority, are shown to be factors in distinguishing categories. Here, as well as more generally, the Strict Layering Hypothesis is found to be both too restrictive and empirically inadequate as a constraint on which elements of prosodic structure are available to phonological processes. It is replaced with a more general Prosodic Accessibility Hypothesis, which in effect extends prosodic reference to minimal nonadjacency. Finally, it is demonstrated that weight-related constraints form a constraint hierarchy of their own – W – within the OT constraint component CON. W interacts with other constraint hierarchies subject to a proposed Hierarchy-Constraint Translation Hypothesis. It is argued that there are many more such independent constraint hierarchies, and that, consequently, CON is highly structured. This thesis has implications for the study of syllable weight, syllable structure, prosodic categorisation, and the organisation of the grammar.

Prosodic Characteristics of Feedback Expressions in Distracted and Non-distracted Listeners
In a previous study [1] we investigated properties of communicative feedback produced by attentive and non-attentive listeners in dialogue. Distracted listeners were found to produce less feedback communicating understanding. Here, we assess the role of prosody in differentiating between feedback functions. We find significant differences across all studied prosodic dimensions as well as influe...
متن کاملCircumscription Revisited An Analysis of Maori Reduplication
It is argued that the process of circumscription must be reintroduced to current theories of prosodic morphology, specifically to Correspondence Theory. This notion has broader effects than the serial circumscriptive process, affecting concepts of categorisation within the grammar, as shown by discussion of the notion ‘base of reduplication’. The reduplicative processes of the Maori language ar...

This paper describes the design and evaluation of prosodically-sensitive concatenative units for a Persian text-to-speech (TTS) synthesis system. Thesyllables used are prosodically conditioned in the sense that a single conventional syllable is stored as different versions taken directly from the different prosodic domains of the prosodically labeled, read sentences. The three levels of the Per...
متن کاملProsodic elements to improve pronunciation in English language learners: A short report
The usefulness of teaching pronunciation in language instruction remains controversial. Though past research suggests that teachers can make little or no difference in improving their students’ pronunciation, current findings suggest that second language pronunciation can improve to be near native-like with the implementation of certain criteria such as the utilization of...
متن کاملThe Prosody of Discourse Structure and Content in the Production of Persian EFL Learners
The present research addressed the prosodic realization of global and local text structure and content in the spoken discourse data produced by Persian EFL learners. Two newspaper articles were analyzed using Rhetorical Structure Theory. Based on these analyses, the global structure in terms of hierarchical level, the local structure in terms of the relative importance of text segments and the ...
